When it comes to food, the Black Forest is probably best known for its Black Forest cake. There are a number of different theories behind how this cake got its name. Some say it comes from the black chocolate shavings that look like a dark forest. Others claim its name comes from the kirsch brandy that is made largely in the Black Forest. The cake may even have got its name from the famous Black Forest style of dress with Bollenhut hat. Traditionally, women wore skirts that were black like the chocolate, blouses that were white like the whipped cream, and the red balls on top of the Bollenhut hats look a lot like cherries. But wherever the name comes from, one thing's for sure: Black Forest cake is a culinary highlight.
The region in and around the Black Forest, however, also has a number of other delicious dishes to offer besides this world-famous cake.
